London to Edinburgh Trial 2021

Ten cars recently completed a re-enactment of the 1911 London to Edinburgh Trial organised by the 20-Ghost Club, with 6 cars completing the 440-mile trip in top gear only. This was the event that 110 years ago firmly established the reputation of the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost as the ‘Best Car in the World’.

Starting in the early hours from London’s Pall Mall Royal Automobile Club, the cars made their way retracing as much of the original route along the Great North Road as possible.  Following 1701, the original trial car, the authenticity of the re-enactment was achieved by requiring the cars to be locked in top gear for the duration of the journey, just as it had been 110 years prior.

After a great first day of driving and an overnight stop at Rudding Park near Harrogate, the fleet of cars made their way towards Scotland, being greeted with a warm reception by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Edinburgh. The drivers and their navigators enjoyed a celebratory dinner aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, reflecting on the ability of these cars to repeat the achievement of 1911 – a great testament to the remarkable engineering and build quality of what is still recognised as one of the best cars in the world.

Jonathan was delighted to participate in this event in 120 EU, a 1925 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, a car we are very proud to maintain.  It is believed that 120 EU is the last Silver Ghost produced by Derby and supplied to the home market.  As the car is still running with its original clutch, Jonathan was concerned that the city driving coupled with a full car of passengers could cause harm.  However, this proved not to be the case with the car being exceptionally capable at pulling away in top gear, making light work of the trial.  Following a period of restrictions, it was wonderful to be able to get together with like-minded enthusiasts and enjoy these wonderful cars.
